Since 1 988, m any rural people base their legal dem ands ov er the land they occupy by claim ing the status of com m unities rem iniscent of quilom bos. The paper first rev iews the approach m ade by researchers of this field and the definitions they giv e to this contem porary phenom enon designated as « black rural com m unities ». A case study from the Middle Am azonas then allows the understanding of the basis of the disagreem ent and incom prehension between the crentes (literally believ ers, general term for Protestants) and the m ilitants of the black m ov em ent. For the latter, the participation in this religious m ov em ent is generally understood as a factor of alienation that prev ents the em ergence of a black consciousness and hence the dev elopm ent towards political action.
