Maritime shifts in the world economy: evidence from the Lloyd's List corpus, eighteenth to twenty-first centuries

Lloyd’s List records on vessel movements are certainly the only possible source to map and analyse the evolution of ports and maritime networks over the last 120 years and globally. After reviewing the contents of this corpus since the first publication in 1696, we introduce the methodology used to extract shipping information from printed documents. A novel analysis of global maritime flows particularly underlines how variations in network size, traffic volume, and connectivity illustrate the impact of major events and transitions. A typology of port growth trajectories is also provided in order to discuss similarities of traffic evolution across the globe.
