Atypota: to break away from aniconism
Atypota : pour en finir avec l’aniconisme
Résumé
Among the words used by scholars to discuss the ways of representing the gods, ‘aniconism’–an unattested word in classical Greek–is often used in an inappropriate way. This paper shows why, and suggests to use instead, when discussing non anthropomorphic figuration, the term atupotos, based on tupos, whose technical meaning is briefly analysed regarding the production of images. This analysis is then extended to the work of the technician ‘par excellence’: Daedalus and his way of working.
Dans le vocabulaire de la figuration des dieux, le terme « aniconisme » – qui n’est pas attesté en grec classique – est parfois utilisé de manière abusive ; on montre en quoi et on propose de lui préférer, quand il s’agit de figurations non anthropomorphiques, le terme atupotos, dérivé de tupos dont on analyse le sens technique s’agissant de la production d’images. On élargit ensuite cette analyse au travail du technicien par excellence qu’est Dédale, et à son mode d’action.
