Maîtriser la nature, un enjeu colonial
Résumé
In mid-17th century the first settlers depend on Amerindian environmental knowledge and on the American experience of some Europeans to survive ; meantime, the first descriptions of the Caribbean flora are made available in France. At Colbert' s prompting, the monarchy organizes the collection of information and samples, encourages at the same time the introduction of new plants in the colonies. In the last third ofthe 18th century, botanical gardens in French Guiana and Saint Domingue contribute to increase the efficacy of this policy in connection with the botanical gardens in the Indian Ocean. Meanwhile the settlers conduct, through local publications and the "Cercle des Philadelphes, " an intellectual activity which grows increasingly independent from royal scientific institutions.
