Les origines de Lutèce : acquis chronologiques. Nouveaux indices d’une présence militaire à Paris, rive gauche

Based on the study of a funerary shaft uncovered in 1974 under the Sénat of Paris together with the recent excavations carried out in the area of montagne Sainte-Geneviève, this article gives an interim report on the first Gallo-Roman occupation on the left bank of the river Seine. The going analysis of diverse categories of finds from this area (imported fine wares, amphorae, coins, small finds) brings information for our knowledge of the origins of Lutetia, until now not well-known; predating the first urban installations, these elements show that the first traces of occupation of the site take place in the middle of the 1st century BC, without dismissing the hypothesis of a later foundation after the Gaulish Lutetia, the location of which still remains unknown. The rapid process of romanization coupled with the specific nature of the associated remains raises questions regarding the purposes and the people involved in the foundation of the town. The first point of interest comes from the wide range of metal objects collected from Pierre-and-Marie-Curie street: most of them are military artifacts, among which cavalry equipment similar to those found under the Sénat. They emphasize the coexistence of both civilians and a military population coming from the Roman auxiliary units throughout the Julio-Claudian period. The concluding chapter is devoted to the military role in the town-planning and building programme, in a historical perspective including the situation of the Parisii, and the logistic role of the Seine valley in the second half of the 1st century BC.
Partant de l'étude d'un puits exhumé en 1974 sous le Sénat de Paris et de fouilles récentes effectuées dans le secteur de la montagne Sainte-Geneviève, cet article dresse un bilan provisoire des premières occupations gallo-romaines attestées sur la rive gauche de la Seine. L'analyse en cours des diverses catégories de mobilier précoce attachées à cette zone (céramiques fines d'importation, amphores, monnaies, petit mobilier) documente une période jusqu'alors mal connue des origines de Lutèce : antérieurs à la mise en place des premières trames urbaines, ces éléments font remonter les premières traces d'une occupation du site au milieu du Ier s. avant J.-C., sans remettre en cause l'hypothèse d'une fondation ex nihilo postérieure à la Lutèce gauloise, non localisée à ce jour. La rapidité du processus de romanisation, alliée à la nature particulière des vestiges associés, soulève plusieurs questions quant aux motifs et aux protagonistes de cette nouvelle implantation. Un premier élément de réponse réside dans l'abondant corpus d'objets métalliques recueillis rue Pierre-et-Marie-Curie : le nombre d'objets liés au domaine militaire, notamment de pièces d'équipement de cavalerie comparables à celles déjà attestées sous le Sénat, souligne la coexistence de populations civiles et militaires issues des corps auxiliaires de l'armée romaine, perceptible tout au long de la période julio-claudienne. Le chapitre de conclusion consacré au rôle de l'élément militaire dans l'implantation et l'édification de la ville s'assortit d'une mise en perspective plus large, touchant au contexte historique, à la situation du peuple des Parisii et au rôle logistique de la voie de la Seine dans la seconde moitié du Ier s. avant J.-C.
