Femmes et hommes face à la virginité
Abstract
The social and symbolic meaning ascribed to virginity has been profoundly reconfigured between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries, with a decline in the importance of female virginity upon marriage, along with the de-Christianization of its conception, among others. While it partly lost its social meaning, the loss of virginity remains an important and intimate personal moment for both men and women, one that actively contributes to the social construction of gender identities.
Entre les XIXe et XXIe siècles, les significations sociales et symboliques accordées à la virginité sont profondément reconfigurées : recul de l’importance de la virginité féminine au mariage, déchristianisation de sa conception... Mais si elle a en partie perdu sa signification sociale, la perte de la virginité demeure, pour les hommes comme pour les femmes, un événement individuel et intime important, qui participe pleinement de la construction sociale des identités de genre.
