Places of exception in gentrified areas: promote diversity – a comparison between two cultural and artistic centres, Rich Mix in London and Centquatre in Paris
Des lieux d’exception dans des quartiers gentrifiés : promouvoir la diversité sociale et culturelle, comparaison de deux centres culturels et artistiques en 2019, le Rich Mix à Londres et le Centquatre à Paris
Résumé
Rich Mix (London) and Centquatre (Paris) are two artistic and cultural centres modelled as exceptions – since they promote the socio-cultural diversity of their visitors – in areas which are intensely gentrified. This paper questions this notion of exception through the analyses of semi-structured interviews, promotional material and the spatial organization of each space. The aims of socio-cultural diversity of each center will be compared to the strategies devised to reach this diversity as well as their results. The article concludes on the success – albeit partial – of this exception. Yet, if the diversity of the visitors is created and maintained, the objective of social and cultural mixing is far from being achieved.
Le Rich Mix (à Londres) et le Centquatre (à Paris) sont deux centres culturels et artistiques qui prônent la diversité socio-culturelle des publics – dans des quartiers fortement gentrifiés. Cet article se propose d’examiner cette exceptionnalité à travers l’analyse d’entretiens semi-directifs, des documents promotionnels et de l’organisation de l’espace. Dans les deux centres, les objectifs de diversité socio-culturelle visés sont confrontés aux stratégies mises en place pour y parvenir et aux résultats obtenus. L’étude pointe vers la réussite – du moins partielle – de cette exception. Toutefois si la diversité des publics est créée et maintenue, la mixité socio-culturelle semble loin d’être acquise.
