Baj, Jaguer et le mouvement Phases
Résumé
This research stands under the sign of the Milan-Paris axes, around which, in the aftermath of the second World War, the relationship between Enrico Baj and Edouard Jaguer, and therefore between Phases and the Movimento nucleare, is developed. To better approach this exchange, that constitutes the pivotal point of our research, we have divided our theses in two parts that seek to define the autonomous but complementary perspectives in which the cultural trajectories of Baj and Jaguer build up. We have therefore, analysed in first place the artistic environment of Milan, that between 1938 and 1958, sees the formation of Baj and the Movimento nucleare, founded by the Italian artist together with Sergio Dangelo. This section considers also the work of Baj between 1938 and 1972. The second part represents the most meaningful and innovative contribution of our work and is centred, on one side, on Phases, approached from a theoretical and formal point of view, that includes its contacts with a number of personages and influences of the time (Cobra, Surrealism, Gaston Bachelard, the Nuclear, the Lyrical Abstraction, the Informal, the research of the '60). On the other, it contains an organic analysis of the collaboration established, around the year 1954, between Baj and the founder of Phases, Edouard Jaguer. It is in this relationship that the most interesting problematic about exhibitions, events and communal activities emerges. In this second part we also highlight fresh aspects of the Baj-Surrealism ties, that include both affinity of ideas and difference of orientation of the artist towards the movement. This partition enables us to examine, in first place, the main directives of Phases, and, in second place, to connect them with the co-operation Baj-Jaguer. This exchange constitutes at one time the final part of our theses and the core of the research, presenting an analysis of the correspondence of the two men between 1954 and the end of the '80.
La présente étude se place sous le signe de l’axe Milan-Paris, autour duquel, dans l’après-guerre, se tissent les relations entre Enrico Baj, Edouard Jaguer, et, aussi, entre le mouvement Phases et le movimento nucleare. Pour mieux appréhender ces échanges, qui constituent l’enjeu de notre recherche, nous avons subdivisé notre thèse en deux parties visant à définir les perspectives autonomes, mais complémentaires, dans lesquelles se développent les parcours culturels de Baj et de Jaguer. Aussi, avons-nous analysé, en un premier temps, le contexte artistique milanais (1938-1958), dans lequel se forme Baj, le movimento nucleare, dont l’Italien fut le fondateur avec Sergio Dangelo, ainsi que l’oeuvre de Baj, de 1938 à 1972. La seconde partie représente la contribution la plus significative et innovatrice du présent travail et porte, d’une part, sur l’étude de Phases d’un point de vue théorique et formel (relations avec Cobra, le surréalisme, Gaston Bachelard, les nucléaires, l’abstraction lyrique, l’informel, les recherches des années 60); de l’autre, elle porte sur l’analyse organique des rapports de collaboration qui se sont établis, à partir de 1954, entre Baj et le fondateur de Phases, Edouard Jaguer, desquels ressortent d’importantes problématiques autour d’expositions, manifestations, manifestes, activités communes. Dans cette même partie nous soulignons certains aspects inédits des liaisons Baj-surréalisme, notamment la communauté d’idées et, aussi, les différences d’orientation qui caractérisent la participation de l’artiste aux initiatives surréalistes. Cette succession nous a permis tout d’abord d’asseoir les grandes lignes directrices de Phases et, donc, de les lier, en un second temps, avec la coopération Baj-Jaguer. Celle-ci, pour son compte, constitue à la fois la partie finale de notre thèse et le “clou” de notre étude de la correspondance qui s’échangea entre les deux hommes de 1954 à la fin des années 80.
