Territorialités, reconnaissances et résistances silencieuses : dans l’ombre du parc national zimbabwéen de Hwange

Abstract : In Zimbabwe, the relationship between the people of Hwange District and the protected areas has been interpreted mainly in terms of human-wildlife conflicts by international organisations, government officials and academics. This reading obscures another, more latent conflict, which relates to the history of the territory and spatial injustices in a district on the periphery of the state. The inhabitants of the communal areas, expelled from their land shortly after the beginning of colonisation for agricultural production (colonial farms) and nature conservation (creation of protected areas, including Hwange National Park, the largest in the country), have experienced repeated dispossession of their territory. Today, the spatial injustices associated with nature conservation remain prevalent. This thesis interrogates, from ethno-geographic materials, the apparent non-conflictuality of social facts in the Hwange district by taking into account the semi-authoritarian situations that surround the daily lived spaces. It instructs a visible hierarchy between conflicts that are silenced (land occupation, claims of access to protected areas and former colonial farms) and those that are not (human-wildlife conflicts) as well as a reflection on the productivity of the sense of injustice at the micro-local level. Examination of conflicting forms of action mobilising the register of the just and the unjust reveals how negotiations, arrangements, and silent resistances are formulated.
